Today is September 15, 2001.  While I was watching coverage of the devastation resulting from terrorist attacks on our country, I found myself staring vacantly at my TV on this cold, dreary and damp day here in Sonoma County, California.   Then an image came up on the screen that snapped me out of my stupor.  Instead of seeing the words "Attack on America", I saw a faint image of our beloved flag with these words imposed:  "America Rising".

I thought about those words and I began to really study our flag.  I realized that I had forgotten how many stripes there are, in what order they are lined up, how many stars there are and how those are aligned.  I felt a bit of shame that I had forgotten, or perhaps I had been taking our flag for granted.  I was also very frustrated because there is not one single flag available in this county and there won't be until Tuesday, hopefully.

I needed to get away from the TV set so I fired up PSP and fixed an image of our flag in my mind.  I began to construct an image, laying down one stripe at a time, one star at a time.  Then I checked to make sure I got it right.  Not really a big deal graphically but, for me, it was a healing exercise.

This is the result - very elementary.  Any of you can do this.  But what's important is how I felt emotionally when it was finished - grounded and hopeful. 

You're welcome to take it and use it however you choose.  If you don't work with tubes, just "right" click and "save" to YOUR own hard drive.  It is not necessary nor appropriate to "give credit" as this is obviously not original.  I've also tubed it.  Download the Flag tube.
